Ha! Peter thought. I did it – I bested Wendy! Thought she could see past my strategies, did she? I’m so clever.

He rushed her to his car when she was finished getting ready. For a girl she’d gone quickly. Most girls he took out spent 2-3 times as much time to make themselves presentable. Not that they weren’t presentable before; he wouldn’t ask them out if they weren’t.

Once she was in the car, Peter sped down her street toward the main road.

“Peter! Slow down!” Wendy said with panic in her voice, clutching the car door with one hand.

“It’s fine,” he said, waving away her concern. “I know what I’m doing. Now,” he decided to change the irksome subject, “are you curious what these tickets are for?” he asked.

“Yes, extremely curious,” she responded, exhaling in a huff. “But first, I need to stop somewhere on our way to the theater,” she reminded him.

“Oh yes, that’s right. Where should I go?” He swept his hand out toward the road.

“To the martial arts studio, where fencing class is,” she said, relief in her voice.

He looked over at Wendy with a flash of irritation. “We’re back to the fencing thing again?” He rolled his eyes and decided he’d heard enough about that stupid class. “How about I tell you what we’re doing tonight on our way there?”

Peter got talking about the grand plans he had for them that evening – dinner at an eclectic new restaurant and then going to Capitol Theater in Salt Lake City to see The Phantom of the Opera. He had Wendy’s full attention (or rather, he had her distracted) for several minutes. She didn’t even realize they were already on the freeway heading north until it was too late to turn around and stop at the martial arts studio.

“Peter!” she cried out in panic, slapping her seat with her hand. “You forgot to stop at the studio! Please, turn around; I need to do something there.”

“I forgot? I believe it was you who forgot to tell me where it is,” he turned the blame on her, lifting his chin with his eyes on the road.

“I can tell you where it is,” she said patiently, “but I need you to exit and go back.”

He looked at her and said apologetically, “Sorry, Wendy. We have a schedule to maintain if we’re to be on time for things tonight.” In reality, he wasn’t sorry at all for intentionally not going where she’d asked him to go. He was so sick of hearing about that ridiculous fencing class.

What’s so special about it, anyway? Nothing that can’t take a back seat to an evening with me.

He could tell Wendy was extremely put out with him and decided to use some of his other strategies to placate her.

“You look lovely tonight; that shade of blue really brightens your eyes. And are those earrings new?” he asked.

She stared at him stone-faced, appearing unamused and unmoved by his flattery.

Why did she have to study psychology? It’s gotten harder to break through her defenses!

He tried again.
